The studio

Arriving in Oradea a few years upon graduation, after having worked for a while in Suceava, the artist’s first studio was at Ullmann Palace. At its last mansard-roofed floor, the imposing building from the beginning of the 20th century, part of the Secession patrimony of Oradea, housed art studios.

Originally wonderfully decorated, with stained glass and clay bas-reliefs, the building, neglected and unrestored, had decayed over time. Here, the artist worked until 2005 when a traumatic event happened, that will have long-lasting effects on his creation. Years later, Ioan Aurel Mureșan recalls this event in the volume Ultrasilvania: “I entered the Ullmann, and the studio. . . there were holes in the ceiling, openings to the attic. . . that abandoned space. . . pigeons were entering the attic. . . and one day, when I came to my studio, the space. . . my studio was full of dead pigeons – they had entered the studio from the attic (there were holes in the roof, there were holes in the ceiling too), the window was large, they saw the light, their brain is small, the size of a nail, and it didn’t cross their small mind to go out the same way they went in, through the roof opening, so they freaked out in my studio. . . with all the works around. . . there were feathers everywhere, and dead pigeons. And in that moment, in that moment I managed somehow to gather the pigeons, left the studio for good and decided not to paint anymore.”

Starting with 2012-2013 he works in the studio of his colleague Diana Gavrilaș, in another patrimony building, the Apollo Palace, on Calea Republicii, built by the architect Kálmán Rimanóczy junior, and from 2021 he is given a studio of his own in the same building, on the last floor.

The high rooms, with windows opening to the pedestrian street, always animated, becomes the place of a fortunate creative reclusion.

The gratitude of working in such an inspiring space makes the daily walk to the studio easier than the calvary of climbing the stairs.
